Air conditioning system turned up to 81 while homeowner is away on vacation
|

If you are planning a vacation this summer, the time you’re away is also the perfect time to give your air conditioner a bit of a break. By simply adjusting your thermostat before you hit the road, you can take some of the load off your home’s cooling system and enjoy a lower electric bill when you get back. If you are thinking about giving your air conditioner a much-deserved vacation while you’re away, here are a few things to consider.

HOW HIGH CAN YOU SET YOUR THERMOSTAT?

August in southern California can be brutally hot, so you may not be sure how high you can safely set your thermostat while you’re away. One of the most important considerations is whether you’ll be leaving pets at home. Just like humans, pets need fresh air, and they are susceptible to heat-related illnesses. If you’re going away and leaving pets at home, leaving the air conditioner on is imperative, but you can probably get away with turning the air conditioner up to 80 degrees. Double check with your veterinarian, though, especially if your pet has any known medical conditions.

Even if you don’t have pets in your home, you still shouldn’t switch off the AC completely. Without air conditioning, humidity can build up in your home and potentially cause damage to

wallpaper, drywall, and even wood. You can, however, safely set your thermostat at 85 degrees while you’re away. This ensures that the system will remove excess humidity from your home without raising your energy bill.

HIGH TECH ENERGY SAVINGS

Adjusting your thermostat before you go on vacation works fine, but you will come home to a hot house. By investing in some new technology, though, you could save big on your cooling bills while you are away and still come home to a comfortable home.

Certain programmable and smart thermostats allow you to set the temperature for certain days. Others connect to your home Wi-Fi network and can be adjusted using your smartphone.
