South Bay Heat Pump Services

Trust Carter Services to Keep You Comfortable

Any furnace or air conditioner requires regular maintenance, so it’s no surprise that a heat pump, which serves both of these purposes, requires the same level of service. Regular maintenance of your heat pump can mean big savings on your electricity bill.

Call Carter Services at (310) 879-5278 to schedule an appointment with our skilled technicians.

Indoor Unit

Proper maintenance of your heat pump starts inside at the air handler. Start by shutting off the power to the unit and verifying with a meter that electricity is not flowing to it. Then, you can check all of the electric connections to ensure that there are no loose wires or other repairs that must be made. If you see any signs of charring or a burned connection where the unit has gotten hot, ensure the connection is tight and call a professional technician to make sure the unit is working properly.

Next, take a look at the blower and be sure that the wheel is clean. Many older units require regular maintenance by oiling the motor bearings, though most newer units have sealed bearings that do not need this service. Make sure that the bearings are not loose.

Finally, clean or replace the air filter on the heat pump. In most circumstances, air filters should be changed once each month, but each model is different so check the owners manual for your heat pump to determine the level of maintenance that your air filter requires.

Outside Unit

When inspecting the outside unit, start your maintenance by shitting down the power and using a meter to ensure there is no electricity flowing through the system. Again, check all of the wiring connections to make sure they are tight and look for signs of heat or burning. Additionally, you might see pits on the contacts, which you will need to replace if this pitting is present. Next, use a multimeter to check the capacity of the capacitors; their actual reading should be within 5-6% of the listed rating in your operator’s manual.

Take the time to wash the outside of the unit. An important part of maintaining your heat pump is to keep it clean so that it will continue to run efficiently. You can use a garden hose to wash dirt, leaves, and grass clippings out of the unit, but do not use pressure and be careful not to damage the thin aluminum fins on the coil. Proper maintenance of your heat pump requires cleaning in the spring, throughout the summer, when necessary, and in the fall.

Finally, check that your thermostat is level, which is especially important if you have an older mechanical heat pump. If you have one, consider switching to a programmable unit for your heat pump which could reduce your electric bill significantly.

When you are finished, turn the power back on to both the indoor and outdoor units of your heat pump and make sure the unit operates normally through a complete heating cycle. With the proper maintenance, your heat pump will serve you well and keep your home both warm and cool for many years.

Professional Inspection

In addition to this regular maintenance, you should have a professional technician service your heat pump at least once each year. Carter Services can also perform regular maintenance at this time as well.
