2016 is on track to be the hottest year ever recorded, according to NASA officials. We’ve had our fair share of blistering hot days lately, and if they’re any indication, the guys at NASA are definitely on to something. Temperatures have been soaring this summer, and in addition to being uncomfortable, they’ve, sadly, proven to be deadly in some instances.

There’s not a whole lot you can do to control the weather, but there are things you can do to make it a bit more bearable and ensure your safety.

5 EASY WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT IN THE SOUTH BAY

DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to stay cool, no matter how hot it is outside. Sweating is your body’s natural temperature control, and when you’re dehydrated, you can’t sweat. Keep a bottle of cool water with you at all times during the summer, especially when spending time outdoors or engage in physical activity. Drink up and refill several times throughout your day.

SWITCH ON THE FANS

The breeze from a fan feels nice on a hot summer day, but did you know that fans actually help maintain a consistent temperature in your home? Hot air naturally rises while cool air falls. Ceiling fans, floor fans and even the fan in your HVAC system helps circulate the air to maintain a more consistent temperature throughout your home.

KEEP THE WINDOWS AND BLINDS CLOSED

Bright, sunny days are beautiful and though you may want to keep your windows and blinds open to enjoy them, it’s best to keep everything closed. Draw your blinds to keep the inside of your home shaded, and close windows to keep hot air outside – especially when your air conditioner is running.

WEAR LIGHT CLOTHING

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing is the best choice when it’s hot. They keep you cooler, and when you opt for light colors, your clothes will reflect the sun and its heat rather than absorbing it and making you feel even hotter.

MAKE SURE YOUR AC IS WORKING PROPERLY

You’re probably already running your air conditioner, but is it running like it should? If it’s taking a long time for your home to get cool, or if your AC can’t seem to keep up, it may be in need of some TLC. Even if you aren’t having any problems, we recommend keeping up with your AC maintenance and having your cooling system inspected annually to prevent any problems that could lead to a breakdown during the hottest days of summer.
